Maybel Myrick grew up in Kimberly, Alabama. During her senior year of high school, a government official came to her high school and administered a test to all students who had taken bookkeeping, typing, or shorthand. When she received her test results, they came with a train ticket to Washington D.C. She worked as a secretary in the War Department in the Pentagon until the war ended when she was transfer to Veteran Administration.
